SERVICE PROFILE
We are active in the provision of specialist marine services and have a group track record in South Africa that spans some three decades.
We listen to our clients' needs and tailor make solutions to suit their specialist marine service requirements. This is one of our many competitive advantages, along with our respect and appreciation of issues relating to safety, environmental protection and the provision of service excellence, as well as the ongoing development of our South African skills base.
We are currently involved in the following service activities:
SERVICE ACTIVITIES
In-Port Bunker Delivery
Of paramount importance in our bunker delivery operation are issues relating to health, safety and environmental protection. Effective 24 hour A day availability ensures seamless service to our Clients.
Our bunker barge 'Smit Bongani' is operational in the Port of Richards Bay where it is active in delivering marine fuels to vessels in-port. In addition to the operation in Richards Bay, we operate the bunker barges 'Pentow Energy' and 'Marine Excellence' in the Port of Durban.
Management of Offshore Tanker Terminals & Subsea Services
We provide our own vessels, personnel, expertise and equipment for turnkey operations involving offshore tanker loading and discharge terminals (such as the Single Point Mooring (SPM) and Conventional Buoy Mooring (CBM) moorings offshore Durban and Mossel Bay), providing our Clients with a single point of responsibility. Included in this service is the preparation of terminal procedure manuals and contingency plans developed in line with national regulatory requirements. Consistently high standards of care and diligence are essential in ensuring an environmentally safe service and form the basis of all operations.
We provide air and saturation diving services and we are able to offer engineering and professional marine services and vessels to support subsea operations. We are also capable of providing ROV and offshore positioning/survey services on an outsourced basis. All of our offshore operations are continuously measured for compliance with the Company's SHE-Q policy. We believe that it is our serious attitude to SHE-Q that has been a major contributor to our success to date.

Offshore Supply & Support
We provide offshore logistic services to the offshore oil and mining industries in South Africa. Support is provided for oil exploration and anchor handling activities to our South African Clients for work on the EB-T Field - south of Mossel Bay - and offshore supply services are provided out of Port Nolloth on the South African west coast via supply vessels 'Sea Carrier' and 'Sea Express'.
Environmental Protection
We operate a fleet of 'Coastwatch' oil pollution abatement vessels on behalf of our Client; on standby and ready for quick mobilization in order to effectively respond to any oil spill emergency. Our personnel are trained and experienced in the use of oil pollution abatement equipment. In addition, on behalf of our Client, we manage an oil pollution patrol aircraft that fulfills aerial surveillance requirements and complements the 'Coastwatch' capability.

Coastal Towage & Ocean Towage Support
Scheduling flexibility and versatility in tug positioning and availability are characteristics of this service which enables us to offer our Clients a high standard of reliability and professionalism in this market.
Vessel Management
We offer a comprehensive ship management and manning service, providing ship owners with professional advice and expertise on operational, technical and commercial levels. With a dedicated administration support service, strict financial control is maintained within the agreed budgetary parameters. Our expertise also includes changes to ship registry and classification, management of specialised vessels, as well as the co-ordination of crew training.
Support for Emergency Marine Response
We provide expert and professional support personnel, vessels, equipment and services in South Africa (including the provision of the company owned salvage tug 'Smit Amandla') so that Emergency Marine Response activities can be conducted speedily and professionally; with personnel being readily available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
TRANSFORMATION & BLACK ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
South Africa's policy of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) is not simply a moral initiative to redress the wrongs of the past. It is a pragmatic growth strategy that aims to realise the country's full economic potential. At SMIT Amandla Marine, we fully support this growth strategy and transformation is an integral part of our company strategy.
During the latter half of 2005, we were delighted and proud to announce the finalisation of our empowerment transaction and the sale of a total of 30% of SMIT Amandla Marine (Pty) Ltd to black shareholders and an inclusive Employee Trust that benefits the 550 permanent employees of the company, 74% of whom are black. This multi-million rand transaction strengthens our position as the leading specialist marine services company in South Africa and reaffirms SMIT's commitment to the principles of Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) and the transformation of the South African Maritime Industry. It also means that the company's employees have a vested interest in SMIT Amandla Marine's ongoing success.
A key driver in the finalisation of our transaction was the commitment demonstrated by our new black shareholders African Maritime Investment Holdings (Pty) Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of MION Holdings (Pty) Ltd) and SMIT Internationale in their quest to create a company that appropriately addresses the critical issue of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment, not only in terms of ownership but, as importantly, in terms of:
It is through the finalisation of our empowerment transaction that we not only succeed in attaining our short-term transformation objectives, but also in satisfying our Clients' desire to contribute meaningfully to the progress and process of transformation through contracting with organisations such as SMIT Amandla Marine (Pty) Ltd that show an active and ongoing commitment to transformation, in line with their own preferential procurement objectives.
