MARITIME DIVISION

Magnum Shield Security Services (Pty) Ltd is a leading provider of specialized security services for the Maritime Industry in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

The Maritime Security division is part of Magnum Shield Security Services (Pty) Ltd, a wholly owned company belonging to the Bidvest Group, one of South Africa’s largest companies.

With the events of 9/11 and the subsequent introduction of ISPS (International Ship and Port Security Code) introduced by the International Maritime Organization in July 2004, security awareness has become an essential part of the maritime industry with its emphasis on international trade, which is why Magnum Shield formed its own Shipping Division offering a range of services to the industry. This includes not only the full range of security measures on or near a ship, but also a range of other ancillary services which include:

SERVICES

Gangway and Ship Security

All Shipping Security Officers are 100 percent in compliance with the ISPS code in accordance with Maritime Security working group Act A. 924 (22). Refreshment courses are held every six months for all Shipping staff.

24 Hour Service

Magnum Shield’s Control Room is in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with fully trained personnel on duty.

 

Cash to Master Services

Magnum Shield Security offers a Cash to Master service with highly trained staff who undertake on-going refresher training.

There is a 100 percent Insurance cover on this service.

Crew Transport and Courier Services

Magnum Shield offers a variety of crew transport and couriers services. All drivers are in possession of a Public Drivers Permit (PDP), which is renewed once yearly.

All vehicles have a valid Transport Permit as per the Road Safety Act.

Amongst other services, this specialized division also assists in meeting crew at airports, escorting them to various venues, arranging medical examinations, assisting in shopping or other matters in the Durban and Richards Bay areas, and also entertains crew by taking them on Safari or other excursions whilst their vessels are in port.

Stowaway Detection

Magnum Shield attends to the detection, removal and repatriation of Stowaways, including the escorting of stowaways to various countries.

Magnum Shield can meet and assist at airports including the international airports at Johannesburg and Cape Town.

OUR MARITIME DIVISION currently operates in the ports of Durban and Richards Bay and plans to begin operating in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Saldanha Bay in 2007.

Magnum Shield Maritime Security is a ISPS approved company and has three PFSO’s (Port Facility Security Officers) who ensure total compliance in all aspects of the ISPS code at all times.

All our Crew Transport staff are in possession of Public Drivers permits (PDP’s) which are renewed annually, and all vehicles have valid Transport Permits as per the Road Safety Act.

All Shipping Security staff are in compliance with the ISPS code in accordance with the Maritime Security Working Group Act A.924 (22).

These security officers undergo regular training courses as per the above.

Magnum Shield Security Services (Pty) Ltd was formed in January 2002 when The Bidvest Group acquired Magnum Security and merged it with its existing security company, Shield Security.

The merger places our company amongst the four largest security service providers in South Africa.

Magnum Shield Security Services (Pty) Ltd has offices in 16 (sixteen) locations in South Africa and employs more than 12,000 staff nationally.

INSURANCE

Magnum Shield Security Services (Pty) Ltd has extensive insurance cover in most facets of liability requirements normally associated with security services.

It should be recorded that compensation for losses will ultimately be accepted or repudiated on the basis of a full investigation by both parties as well as the insurers.

BLACK ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

The Bidvest Group as a South African Company is committed to Black Economic Empowerment as a national and commercial imperative.

Through joint ventures and direct equity stakes in business units prior to the current equity transaction, it was estimated that the value of the BEE businesses within Bidvest was R500 million.

On July 9th 2003, The Bidvest Group announced that a BEE Consortium (Dinatia Investment Holdings) would acquire 15 percent of the Group’s shareholding, thereby becoming the largest single direct shareholder. This, in addition to approximately 20 percent of shares held by BEE institutions, takes the total BEE shareholding in Bidvest to over 35 percent. This is inclusive of both local and international assets to show full participation in every facet of Bidvest businesses globally.

The value of the current BEE transaction is now estimated to be R2.1 Billion.

The Bidvest Group in its entirety complies fully with the Government BEE strategy as outlined in the Department of Trade and Industry’s document and as enacted in recent legislation.

The scheme differs from other BEE transactions due to the fact that the Dinatia Shareholders are committed to being actively involved in the day-to-day operations of The Bidvest Group to add value from within. This includes senior HDI appointments to Boards across the full spectrum of the Bidvest Companies. Further enhancements include Skills Development programmes, committed affirmative procurement policies and enhanced Social Investment initiatives.
