News Flash - rescued sailors reach DurbanMar 5, 2007
The container ship Ever Gaining berthed in Durban this morning (Monday 5 March) bringing 23 rescued seafarers off the bulk ship GRACIA (incorrectly identified as the fishing vessel GARCIA in this morning’s News Bulletin).
The 23 sailors, who are made up of Eastern Europeans and West Africans were picked up by the Evergreen container ship after having abandoned their vessel in the aftermath of Cyclone Gamede off the southern coast of Madagascar. Their ship had experienced engine failure at the height of the storm in which waves of 17m were experienced, causing the crew to fear for their lives.
There are conflicting reports about whether GRACIA has sunk or is still afloat. The 24,000-dwt ship, was on a voyage from Thailand to West Africa with a cargo of rice and is on charter to a Dutch-based company.
