The port helicopter at Richards Bay crashed in the entrance channel of the harbour a short while ago and early reports say one person is missing. The Agusta A109 helicopter, which had returned from a full service overhaul only a few days earlier, was engaged in ship piloting activities when the accident occurred.

According to sources there were four people on board at the time. One person was reported to be missing but an eyewitness report in the last few minutes (13:10 local time) described seeing someone being recovered from the water. He was unable to confirm if this was a survivor or perhaps another person involved in the rescue attempt.

The Durban port helicopter, a sister aircraft to the one that has crashed, has gone to the scene to render assistance.
