According to a report in the EP Herald newspaper the luxury sailing yacht Mieke, which until recently was South Africa’s last remaining commercial fishing vessel operating under sail, has sunk northeast of Beira.

The 33-metre, 133-ton Grand Banks schooner was converted by a Cape St Francis businessman to become a luxuriously fitted cruising yacht sailing in Mozambique and Indian Ocean island waters.

At the time of the sinking there were no passengers on board and the newspaper reports that all six crewmembers were able to scramble into a rubber inflatable shortly before Mieke sank and make their way ashore.
