The Greek-owned dry bulker Kiperousa of 14,921-gt went aground onto either a reef or sandbank southwest of East London early this morning, in a position approximately opposite the village of Hamburg in the Eastern Cape.
According to reports the 1984-built vessel is firm on the reef/sandbank and is taking water in the engine room. A helicopter and rescue craft are already on site (mid morning, Tuesday) and the crew are reported to be in no immediate danger. Salvage tugs from Smit Salvage and possibly other companies are on their way to the scene.
Kiperousa is owned by Swan Marine of Piraeus and is managed by Sealing Marine also of the same address. The ship is flagged in Malta.
