GAC South Africa reports in its regular news service that the National Ports Authority has decided to introduce a helicopter service during the winter months for pilot disembarkation from tankers at Saldanha Bay.

The pilot on duty will however have the right to use the conventional pilot boat if he thinks the weather conditions are suitable.

The criteria relating to the use of a helicopter:

  • If the vessel does not comply with the required draught to length and freeboard as laid down in the guidelines

  • If the vessel has to be taken off the berth due to weather conditions

  • If the swell is 2m or more

  • It will always remain within the pilotís discretion whether the helicopter is required.

N.B. Helicopters are used for pilot transfer at the ports of Durban and Richards Bay.
