Safmarine names second new ship

The second of three new container ships being built for Safmarine for the West African trades at the German Volkswerft Stralsund Shipyard was named on Saturday (31 July 2004).
The new 2,100-TEU ship is named Safmarine Nimba after a mountain peak and range along the borders of Ivory Coast, Guinea and Liberia and was christened by Mrs Melodie Wessels, wife of Tiger Wessels the founder and vice-chairman of UTi Worldwide Inc.
Safmarine Nimba will join a sister ship Safmarine Cameroun which entered service recently on the Europe – West Africa service, having been specially designed for the restrictions of some West African ports. A third vessel is due to enter service shortly.
