The first of five identical high-specification, double-hulled, 40,000-dwt new building oil products / chemical tankers for Unicorn Shipping was launched in Korea on Good Friday, 9 April 2004.
Nyathi was christened by Mrs Jeanne Clark, wife of Grindrod Limited Managing Director, Ivan Clark.
Following delivery during June this year, Nyathi will be employed by an oil major for service in the Mediterranean.
Nyathi follows the commissioning and delivery to joint venture company Southern Tankers last month of the first-of-series sister ship Southern Unity (see Ports & Ships News section dated ). That ship will commence service on the South African coast within the next few months for the account of BP and Shell.
Unicorn has an option with the shipbuilder for a further tanker of this type.
