Damaged bulker under tow for Nacala
Mar 25, 2004
The damaged Singapore-registered bulker CSK Tribute is under tow behind the tug Nikolay Chiker en route for the northern Mozambique port of Nacala, where cofferdam repairs will be undertaken by Durban ship repair company Dormac.
The bulker is carrying a full cargo of iron ore loaded in Brazil for China. En route the crew noticed a problem, which turned out to be a 2m x 2m fracture in the hull below the waterline. The vessel has taken on some water, leading to the decision to seek shelter along the Mozambique coast.
Nacala is the nearest deepwater port.
According to reports the tow is progressing with some difficulty, with the bulker in reverse and yawing behind the tow, and it appears a second tug will be called on to provide stabilising assistance. At 3.5 knots the tow is expected to take more than a week.
