Ship breaks up off Madagascar
Feb 16, 2004
The 1976-built general cargo ship Sprinta (8,903-dwt, 5,840-gt) is reported to have gone aground off the coast of Madagascar and has broken her back. There are no details about possible injuries or fatalities to the crew and no details as to the ship’s exact position or what cargo she was carrying.
Sprinta was scheduled to load a parcel of coal at the Bluff Mechanical Appliance in Durban this week.
The Durban-based tug Toto, owned and operated by Tall Ships responded to the call of distress but the salvage was aborted after news was received that Sprinta was breaking up.
