Lykes Line ups its frequency between Europe, Africa and South America
Oct 7, 2003
Lykes Lines is improving the frequency of its service between Europe, the west coast of Africa and the East Coast of South America from every eleven days to every eight days and is adding a dedicated feeder to the ports of Tema, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria, which connects with the service at the Ivory Coast port of Abidjan.
The Europe-Africa-East Coast South America service, which has already proved popular with European shippers exporting to ports on the west coast of Africa, will now provide an even greater level of reliability, says senior vice president, Tony Bruno:
“Our objective is to create an even fast, regular and more dependable service. Frequent sailings are an important part of that equation and the new schedule will benefit shippers moving cargo into the ports along the West African coast.”
The most dramatic improvement comes with Abidjan, where the old schedule, which offered sailings every two weeks, will be replaced with sailings every eight days. Another new feature, which also involves Abidjan, is the provision of a dedicated feeder service to the ports of Tema and Lagos.
“It’s an obvious extension of the service,” says Bruno. “It means that we can now offer shippers in Europe a new route into their markets in Nigeria and Ghana.
“The key, of course, is that the feeder service should be as regular and reliable as the service it’s connecting with. That’s why we are making it a dedicated service.”
In addition to the new dedicated feeder from Abidjan, onward connections are also available to other ports in the region. The service connects at Abidjan with Lykes Lines’ North America - Africa Service, giving shippers in Europe a direct route into South Africa through the ports of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth or Durban.
The new service schedule came into effect in the first week of October 2003.
The port rotation is: Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Le Havre, Las Palmas, Dakar, Abidjan, Tema*, Lagos*, Zarate, Montevideo, Rio Grande, Santos, Rio De Janeiro, Fortaleza, Rotterdam
* Served by dedicated feeder
