Partial success with refloating Sealand Express
Sep 13, 2003
The big salvage attempt during spring high tide last night and repeated early this morning succeeded in pivoting the grounded container ship Sealand Express into a position facing the open sea of Table Bay, and later pulling the 32,929-dwt vessel clear of the sandbank on which she has been held since 19 August.
Shortly afterwards however the ship ran onto another sandbank further out from her original position where she remains stuck fast this morning, although it appears that the salvage team in charge of the operation, Smit Salvage South Africa are reasonably confident of success later this afternoon.
This preliminary and unconfirmed report will be updated at about midday today (Saturday) with the latest official report from the salvage company.
