New port managers appointed
Jun 22, 2003
A new set of hands will be on the helm of the country’s two biggest and busiest ports from this month as a result of the appointment of new port managers at both Durban and Richards Bay.
A number of port users have expressed concern in the past that management at the ports seldom has a chance to settle in before it is changed.
The latest appointments follows the promotion of Durban’s port manager, Ms Nozipho Sithole to head office where she takes over the position of General Manager: Ports and Corporate Affairs from Mrs Riah Phiyega. Mrs Phiyega is moving into the senior post of Chief Executive Corporate Affairs within Transnet.
In Sithole’s place as port manager of Durban comes Basil Ndlovu, who during the past seven years has been port manager at Saldanha Bay and subsequently at Richards Bay.
His position at Richards Bay is filled by Douglas Hlubi Mzamo, who is a chemical engineer by profession with a background in several industries including a stint with Richards Bay Minerals, the Industrial Development Corporation and with marine operations at the National Ports Authority at Cape Town.
Siyabonga Gama, chief executive of the NPA said at the weekend that he was pleased with the transfers. Referring to the move of Nozipho Sithole to head office, he said,
“Riah Phiyega’s transfer to Transnet as Chief Executive for Corporate Affairs has left me short handed at head office. I’ve been excited by the way Nozipho Sithole has ran the port of Durban and the way in which her colleagues respected her.”
