Strike action hits port of Richards Bay hard
Apr 26, 2003
Casual labourers at the port of Richards Bay took matters into their own hands on Wednesday (23 April 2003) by stopping all cargo handling at the multi purpose terminal at the port of Richards Bay and by Friday evening much of the work at the terminal, which handles general cargo vessels, was still at a halt.
According to unconfirmed reports casual labourers entered the terminal area and prevented other workers from going about their business. This included boarding ships and physically dragging stevedores and other labourers off the vessels in port. There are reports of some injuries to workers.
The reports say that although police were summoned they were ineffective in preventing the strike action, although strikers were eventually removed from the area.
