Multi-trade carrier Safmarine has appointed Ivan Heesom-Green, currently
Safmarine's Liner Executive for South African-based trades, as its new Liner
Director. Heesom-Green steps into the shoes of Graham Peirce, who retires at
the end of March 2003 after a distinguished career of 16 years with the
Safmarine Group.

Peirce transferred to Safmarine (Pty) Ltd as Liner Director in 1987 after occupying senior management positions with the Rennies Shipping Group, which
included a position as General Manager.

As Liner Director based in Antwerp, Belgium, Ivan Heesom-Green will assume responsibility for the operation of Safmarine's trade routes worldwide. He
will also oversee trade finance, fleet management and operations, multi-purpose vessel services and growth, development and project activities.

Heesom-Green will also be appointed to the business development
committee of Safmarine Container Lines N.V., effective April 1, 2003.

A dual South African/British national, Ivan Heesom-Green joined Safmarine's
Cape Town office in 1990. He held various positions in the company's finance, marine and liner departments. A former Safmarine Group Marine Executive, Heesom-Green assumed responsibility for the Liner Division of Safmarine (Pty) Ltd in 2002.
