New ship, new service for Safmarine
Feb 12, 2003
Safmarine, which is part of the AP Møller Group, yesterday (Tuesday 11 February 2003) launched its new COREX (Commodity & Oil Rig Express) service in Houston, Texas, USA.
COREX is an enhanced multi-purpose vessel service serving both former Torm Lines clients and new customers. The new service will offer a more direct routing between US Gulf ports and a range of key oil ports in West Africa, and follows last year’s purchase, by the A.P. Møller Group, of Torm Lines.
The service will also offer faster transit times; for example a market-leading transit of only 22 days between Houston and Onne/Port Harcourt, the hub of the Nigerian oil industry.
The service port rotation will be as follows: New Orleans, USA - Houston, USA - Abidjan, Ivory Coast - Onne, Nigeria – Lagos, Nigeria - Luba, Equatorial Guinea - Douala, Cameroon - Takoradi, Ghana - Abidjan, Ivory Coast - Brooklyn, USA* - Philadelphia, USA - Norfolk, USA - New Orleans, USA (* - during cocoa season)
Speaking at the launch of the service, Safmarine’s Albert Pegg said the new COREX service complements Safmarine's existing multi-purpose vessel services between Europe and West Africa and between Southern Africa and West Africa.
“The new service is marked by the introduction of a vessel custom-built for the specific transportation needs of the oil industry. The Safmarine Houston is a further indication of Safmarine’s long term commitment to this trade.”
A dedicated and specialised team of Safmarine multi purpose vessel professionals, many of whom are experienced ships captains now working ashore, have been joined by experts recruited from Torm Lines to ensure continuity of service to former customers and peace of mind to prospective shippers.
Pegg said the Safmarine’s specialisation in breakbulk and multi purpose vessel operations confirmed the company’s commitment to providing personalised shipping solutions in the breakbulk and project cargo sectors.
“This is demonstrated by Safmarine’s ability to schedule the frequency of sailings according to customer needs.”
Another further benefit to COREX customers is the inclusion, in Safmarine’s e-Business offering, of services specifically suited to the breakbulk and project cargo sectors. From the industry-first breakbulk track and trace feature, booking with automatic confirmation, web bills of lading and daily stack dates to the regular updating of shipping schedules, customers are now able to monitor progress of shipments on line, any where, any time.
Safmarine says it is determined to deliver a reliable, safe and secure shipping service, and has recently been accepted onto the US government’s C-TPAT initiative.
“This essential new security initiative makes Safmarine a truly blue chip choice, providing customers with added peace of mind,” says Pegg.
