Ships from two navies are making visits to the Angolan port of Luanda during December. Earlier in the month the Royal Navy HMS Glasgow (D88), a Type 42 destroyer was accompanied by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Gold Rover (A271) on a visit to the Angolan capital between 11 and 13 December.
RFA Gold Rover has been operating in African waters for several months, having recently visited Ghana with the Duke Class (Type 23) frigate HMS Lancaster on a goodwill visit to Takoradi in September.
The second visit to Luanda which began yesterday (29 December) and will be of about ten days duration consists of the French Navy helicopter carrier FNS Jeanne D’Arc (R97) accompanied by the frigate FNS Georges Leygues (D640). The two ships are carrying a number of cadets undergoing specialist training.
