The South African Ship Registration Act was published on Friday (25 April 2003), coming into immediate effect.

According to Mike Poseman of maritime attorneys Adams & Adams, the Act is a welcome modernisation of ship registration in South Africa, and is based largely on the English system.

”The Act provides for the registration of South African-owned ships, and makes provision for foreign joint venture ownership. The Act also allows for the dual registration of a foreign-registered vessel which is under bareboat charter to South African nationals.”

Poseman said that Act creates the South African Ship Registration Office, which will administer the registration of ships, and mortgages over ships.
