Chile buys RN frigate

The British anti-submarine warfare and surveillance frigate HMS Sheffield (F96) has been sold to Chile for an amount of between ten and fifteen million dollars, depending on the type and sophistication of weaponry provided. The British ship was built in 1988 and decommissioned in November 2002
HMS Sheffield was designated as a Type 22 Batch 2 ASW/surveillance frigate and is the only survivor of four improved Broadsword class frigates. The ship carries a complement of 265 and is powered by two gas turbines for cruising speed supplemented with two boost gas turbines, driving two shafts for a speed of 18 knots.
The ship displaces 4,850 tons fully loaded and is equipped for two helicopters in a hangar situated aft. HMS Sheffield was homeported at Devonport.
