The 46,087-gt P&O Cruises’ ship Pacific Sky has been forced to return to port in Auckland, New Zealand after taking on more than 160 tonne of seawater through a corroded storm water duct.
The decision to cancel the scheduled cruise to Samoa and Fiji last Saturday (15 March 2003) was made 30 hours into the cruise, after some of the 1,600 passengers on board the 1984-built former Fairsky (later Sky Princess) reported the sounds of sloshing water below deck.
The ship arrived safely in port where passengers disembarked so that a full evaluation of the problem and possible repairs could be carried out. The New Zealand Maritime Safety Authority later confirmed that an inspection had revealed corrosion and cracks as the cause of the leaks.
According to some report the departure of the ship had been delayed in Auckland because of an 85-cm long crack in the ship’s hull, which required repairs.
